Rites of Passage
The Map of Soul
In my experience, there are 9 major Rites of passage thresholds on the journey from birth to
death, which are death/rebirth thresholds…opportunities to die to ourselves but stay alive.
dying to ourselves but staying alive for the birthing of ourselves anew.
these can be thresholds of powerful transformation if moved through consciously, with
awareness of change, growth, and metamorphosis.
Each threshold in this map of soul evolution is a conscious death experience, therefore it is
also a conscious birth experience.
seen from the human perspective we go through a big developmental change or growth
period.. for example from childhood to adulthood. this is a time of metamorphosis, a time that
can be compared to the caterpillar becoming a butterfly. the crucial time during this
metamorphosis is the cocoon stage that the caterpillar goes through. It turns to mush and an
entirely new and different being is birthed from the death of the caterpillar. The cocoon stage is
the time the butterfly is forming its wings. the perfection in the creation of those wings is a
miracle and requires this level of cocoon or initiation, letting go and surrendering to happen to
let the grace of the divine in, to grow into the magnificence that is the butterfly and its ability to
a fly.
From a shamanic perspective, this cocoon stage is seen as and called the dark night of the
soul. the reason for this is that if you realize that we are more than just this human form, you
understand that what the butterfly is doing in the cocoon is forming its soul wings and those
soul wings will be unique to that creature the butterfly and its soul purpose or reason for being
on the earth.
bringing it back to the human and our reason for being on the earth, it’s the dark night of the
soul that enables us to grow our soul wings so we can truly fly, truly live, truly be alive, in our
bodies.. like the butterfly we can allow the cocoon to help us to die and become resurrected or
to be born anew.
Yeshua and Mary Magdalena lived this night of the soul, this initiation.. they both sacrificed
themselves so they could be resurrected into their souls’ purpose or awakened to the love that
they are. Yeshua by leaving his body and mary staying in her body..
